Zanzibar, Its name evokes a romantic and tragic past. To the shores of these islands came Summarians, Assyrians, Hindus, Egyptians, Phoenecians, Southern Arabians, Chinese and Malays. Burton, Speke, Livingstone, Rebman and Grant set out on their journeys of discovery to the vast interior of Africa.
In Stone Town we can arrange accommodation in the deluxe Serena Hotel or the simpler but charming Emersons and Tembo hotels. From here you may visit the exciting day and night markets, the Sultan’s Palace or enjoy one of our dhow safaris to a nearby sand key with beach barbecue.
From Stone Town you can visit the spice farms and ancient forests of the interior. You can sit on the seafront and watch the sailing dhows ply their trade; or take a boat yourself to one of the offshore islands or sandbanks for coral diving or relaxation.
Then there is the beautiful east coast, where you can relax completely on vast unspoiled beaches, swim and scuba dive in the clear and warm waters of the Indian Ocean, walk inland through spice farms, arable and scrub lands, and dense forest.
There is a choice of accommodation here hotel or beach bungalow. For example Breeze's Beach Club is located on a long and unspoiled section of pristine East Coast sands, bordered by tall palms and a warm azure sea. All rooms are air-conditioned, elegantly furnished in authentic Zanzibari style, and with en suite bathrooms. The architecture owes both to Kenyan and Zanzibari influences and there is an abundance of intricate and skilled wood carving. The justly renowned kitchens offer the best cuisine on the East coast. Tropical fruits, fish and spicy meat dishes are in evidence. A swimming pool and activity centre for beach, fitness and watersports give a wide choice for the active. Or choose the lovely Matemwe Bungalows which, like the restaurant, are built of local materials - coral, stone, local timber and palm thatch. Whilst making an art of simple aesthetically pleasing constructions, the designers have made Matemwe bungalows comfortable and restful.
The food is excellent using local produce and includes a lot of fish dishes. Matemwe is set between two lovely beaches and snorkeling and diving are excellent. We offer many more accommodations on the east coast from very simple bungalows with small bar/restaurant to “international” style beach resorts in high quality cottage accommodation with a choice of restaurants and facilities for diving etc. |
